$1,500 Winner Announced for 2008 DailySplice Coding Challenge

Victoria BC, May 2, 2008 – DailySplice announced the winner of their first coding challenge today worth $1,500. The winner is UVic computer science student Dan Sanders. Dan is in his second year at UVic and took a keen interest in the challenge when it was posted in November. The prize was co-sponsored but the UVic Computer Science and Software Engineering departments as well as DailySplice.

The challenge tested a programmer’s ability to analyze sets of data and identify patterns. Entrants were given 20 sets of data containing information about train schedules. Sitting in various rows and on various train cars were a number of secret agents. Based analyses of past trends, the entrants were asked to write a program that predicted how many secret agents would be sitting in each car of upcoming trains, as well as other details about the agents.

Dan’s solution was rated based on four criteria: accuracy of patter recognition, usability/readability of outputs, efficiency of the algorithm, and the quality of code. “Dan’s solution picked out some fairly well hidden patterns in complicated sets of data, and we were pretty impressed.” Said DailySplice co-founder, Rian Bowden.

“I would like to thank DailySplice for posting this challenge. I learned a great deal about data visualization and combinatorial data analysis while working on it.” Dan said in an email. While there was only one winner, Rian pointed out that all the participants seemed to enjoy the challenge and there were a some great solutions.
